What others say

"My students had a blast playing this game. They really got into pretending to be a slot machine, sound effects and all. The practice portion of the activity easy to follow. Great of exam review!"

"I used this as part of a review of 1st semester with my AP Stats students. They enjoyed the break from our usual notes style, and I always appreciate an activity that allows us to collect our own data so students can make stronger connections to what we're learning. "

Description

How the game works:

  1. Have three students sit in chairs at the front of the room. They need to either have dividers between them or be blindfolded so they cannot see each other.
  2. Give each student a basket or bowl with a few items. For the sake of convenience, I will use common items found in a classroom (ex: dry erase marker, index card, ruler). You need three of each item - borrow from coworkers if needed!
  3. Someone will count down (3…2…1…) and each student will choose an item from their basket.
  4. If all three students choose the same item, it’s a win!

Use the following worksheets to have students review probability and/or random variables.

*You could do this activity and ONLY use the Probability questions. However, if you use the Random Variable questions, you will need to do the Probability questions as well to find P(win), which is used in the RV worksheet.

After the 2025-2026 school year, this activity will be updated to reflect changes in the CED that are coming Fall 2026. All buyers will receive an email to download the updated versions.
