Description

Most students of History are familiar with the African-American Civil Rights movement and its most celebrated icons, such as Thurgood Marshall, Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Malcolm X, etc. However, what remains less understood is the strategic divisions that often existed among these leaders, and how their movement expanded to include other causes of social justice, like equal pay and ending the war in Vietnam.

This two-part worksheet provides an overview of the Civil Rights movement, focusing on its key figures, tactics and accomplishments. Part I contains a twelve-question matching exercise which seeks to give students an essential understanding of the movement's evolution from Brown v. Board of Education to MLK's assassination: what was the impact of Browder v Gale? What were Freedom Rides? What started the Montgomery Bus Boycott?

Part II contains a five-question True/False activity that is designed to develop students' analytical understanding of the Civil Rights movement's goals and its long-term impact: when did lynching become a federal crime in the US? What role did Martin Luther King Jr. play in the Memphis Sanitation Workers' strike?

MashAvz strives to create academic material that is intelligent, fun and appealing to the eye. We hope that our curriculums will stoke your students’ intellectual curiosity and love of the arts, while also instilling in them a great respect for the world’s diversity.
