APARTMENT RENOVATION: Area, Perimeter & Budgeting

Are your students asking, "When will I ever use this math in real life?"
Show them the real-world power of geometry and financial literacy with this highly engaging, no-prep Apartment Renovation Math Project!

In this Project-Based Learning (PBL) activity, students step into the shoes of a Project Manager in charge of completely renovating an apartment and garage. They are handed a grid-based architectural floor plan and a specific set of client design rules. Students must calculate the dimensions of each room, sort their materials, and calculate the final financial budget for the renovation.

The Scenario:

  • Flooring: Tile will be installed in the kitchen, bathroom, hall, and garage. Hardwood will be used in all other areas.
  • Walls: Wallpaper will be hung in the bathroom and kitchen. All other walls will be painted (9-foot ceilings!).
  • Ceilings: All ceilings in the apartment (and garage) will be painted.

Math Skills Covered:

  • Reading a grid to find Length and Width
  • Calculating Area and Perimeter of rectangles
  • Converting 2D floor plans into 3D wall space (Multiplying Perimeter × Ceiling Height)
  • Financial Literacy (Multiplying decimal prices by square footage to find a total budget)
  • Categorizing and sorting data

Why Teachers Will Love This Project:

  • Scaffolded for Success: The math is broken down into three logical tables: Table 1 (Basic Geometry), Table 2 (Sorting Materials), and Table 3 (Financial Budget).
  • The "Ceiling" Trick: Students must use critical thinking to realize that the square footage of a ceiling is exactly the same as the floor area they already calculated!
  • Zero Grading Headaches! The instructions explicitly tell students to "Ignore all doors and open boundaries. Just pretend every room has completely solid walls!" This guarantees that every student will use the exact same standard perimeter formulas, making your Answer Key 100% objective and easy to grade.
  • Grid Accuracy: No more students guessing the length of a line. The floor plan is drawn precisely on a 1-foot grid, making counting measurements exact.

What's Included:

  • 1-Page Architectural Floor Plan
  • 1-Page Student Instruction & Pricing Guide
  • 1-Page Scaffolded Calculation & Budget Tables
  • Full Teacher Answer Key (with step-by-step math shown!)

Perfect For:

  • Middle School Geometry & Pre-Algebra
  • High School Consumer Math or Financial Literacy courses
  • End-of-unit assessments or project-based learning
  • Emergency Sub Plans!
