IPATHA Series: POSHA–S Database

The Appraisal of the Stuttering Environment (ASE) Database, intermittently updated, contains about 1250 respondents from 8 countries and 6 languages. The Microsoft Excel file features more than 208 columns and up to 1500 rows. Some data, such as places of birth and residence, primary job or occupation, languages known, race, and religion are included as text. Other demographic and all attitude ratings were rated on 1-9 numerical scales. All scaled ratings have been converted to a uniform -100 to +100 scale, with some item ratings inverted so that, uniformly, higher ratings reflect more positive attitudes and lower ratings reflect more negative attitudes. All respondents are classified according to population, category within population, region or continent, country, language, and other distinctive features.

Following a listing of more than 1250 individual respondents, sample means for demographic and summary ASE scores (components, subscores, and Overall Stuttering Scores) of more than 25 different study samples are provided. Sample means for individual items are not included according to previous agreements with the numerous investigators. However, below the sample mean summaries, the highest and lowest sample means for each item, component, subscore, or Overall Stuttering Score are shown, based on all the various ASE samples. The medians of the sample means are also shown, which have been considered the best estimates of “average” attitudes. Last, means of all the respondents in the database are provided.

In order to protect anonymity of respondents and investigators, respondents are listed in random order. Also, birthdates and birth cities (when provided) as well as individual respondent codes are removed.

There are no limits on how you can use this database. You can sort the database in Excel or a compatible statistical program such as SPSS or SAS according to any of the demographic categories, such as for age, income, or education; any of the summary ASE components, subscores, or Overall Stuttering Scores; or such categories as region, language, and so on.

I recommend that you download the IPATHA Users Guide (for a fee) from TPT and read the information about the IPATHA databases and also download information about the formulas in the IPATHA Instrument Formula Assistance document (no cost). I further suggest that you peruse the IPATHA Bibliography (no cost) to learn about the kinds of studies that have been carried out with the POSHA–Cl and the extensively used and related POSHA–S for stuttering.

If you cannot open the file after downloading it, you should contact me at ken.stlouis@mail.wvu.edu. Also, if you want documents or presentations from your research to be listed in the regularly updated IPATHA Bibliography, please send references to me at ken.stlouis@mail.wvu.edu.

IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS:

1. The Excel file requires about 1.7 MB of memory. It is likely that it will be only marginally usable on a smart phone; users should have access to a laptop or desktop computer.

2. Users should download the file from TPT and then immediately make a backup copy and keep it on a storage unit separate from their computer. As they work with the file, they should back up every newly created version so that, in case of a computer crash, they can recover their previous work.

DISCLAIMERS:

1. The database was generated in Microsoft Excel, from early versions up to 16.62. No warranty can be provided that it will run on earlier or later versions of Excel or related programs.

2. Whereas great effort has been devoted to generating an accurate database, the author cannot assure that it is entirely accurate or consistent. Individual investigators or research assistants entered their data into spreadsheets, and these were consolidated by the author. No doubt minor errors still exist.

3. For places of birth or residence, occupations, race, religion, and languages known, many of the entries remain in the original entered languages. Given that the language of the survey is indicated for every respondent, entries can be translated into English or most other well-known languages using a variety of free internet translation programs.

4. The ASE database will likely be intermittently updated. When or if that occurs, summary information will change slightly. Purchasers of the ASE database will not be sent revised databases after such updates, and, if they decide to download a later version, they must do so at the full price.
