Absolute Value Functions Activities - 3 in 1!
This is a set of 12 graphs of absolute value functions and 3 different activities to go along with them. In all three activities, the graphs are posted around the room.
The first activity is a true scavenger hunt in that the student is give a clue about one of the graphs such as "the graph opens up and the vertex is (-2, 3)." The student hunts around the room looking for the absolute value function that is described. Once they find it, they record the letter found there. Clues are grouped in 4s so that the four letters will spell a common math word. There are 16 questions total, spelling a total of 4 common math words. Concepts covered in the clues include vertex, zeros, whether the absolute value opens up or down, y-intercept, range and equation. Student recording sheet and key included.
The second activity uses the graphs for range and transformations practice. The student is given a recording sheet and finds the range and lists the transformations that were applied to the parent function to create each graph. Student recording sheet and key included.
The third activity is great for review. The student is given a recording sheet and asked to find the vertex, whether it is a maximum or minimum, the zeros, the axis of symmetry and/or the y-intercept and the equation of each graph. Student recording sheet and key included.
