Abstract Design Challenge

Description

This is a great project for design classes at any grade level 8th-12th. The Design Quad is a tool I've created to help students think beyond the normal designs. Before, when I would ask my students to design an abstract or stylized set, they became overwhelmed quickly. Now with the Design Quad, students can only make "abstract" choices for their designs. When introducing this to my 8th graders, I made them choose 2 numbers 1-8 and 2 numbers 1-10. Doing so locked in their design choices. However, I allowed my more advanced classed to choose their own parameters. This project has lead to some interesting designs and great design conversations. It is also a great way to rid yourself of all the "extra" art supplies you collect throughout the year.

Depending on your class time and speed, allow 9-10 days of building with 2-3 days of presentations. For my presentations, I did a gallery walk in class to allow for critiques.

Included with this lesson is:

  • Grading Rubric Print Out
  • Grading Rubric Electronic(Ability to make changes and cater to your class) Rubric will show the fraction and percentage grade.
  • Teaching Guide

*With the rubric, I have found adding 10 points before or after doing the percentage helps with grade scale.
