What is Accountable Talk?

Accountable talk is a way to help your students learn how to engage in an academic dialogue. It helps them learn how to ask questions, respectfully disagree, share ideas, ask for clarification, make a connection, and extend their thinking.

How to Use Accountable Talk

Explicitly teach your students how to engage in discussions. This can be done using the posters, bookmarks, anchor charts, flip cards, or bulletin board display. Model how to engage in a discussion and then have students practice with a partner and in small groups.

Why Use Accountable Talk?

Accountable talk helps ensure students KNOW how to have discussions about topics and keeps them ENGAGED in the conversation. Too often, we assume our students are goofing off or distracted when they really just don't know how to talk about an academic subject. This pack will help solve that problem!

Print-and-Go Materials

All Create-abilities resources are designed with ease of use in mind. Don’t have a color printer? No problem. Pages that do not render well in black-and-white have black-and-white copies included. Be classroom-ready with a quick print.

These sentence frames really helped my students learn how to engage with one another in academic discourse. I do think some of the sentence frames felt a little unnatural for them to use in daily academic conversations, but I did appreciate the ability to show a variety of options for them to choose from.
