This interactive flipchart introduces, provides practice for, and assesses place value. It is highly engaging with many opportunities for student interaction. There are many “magic tricks” within the flipchart, and your students will think you’re amazing! There are very detailed page notes, and it is important to read them or you might miss something.
The flipchart includes the following lessons:
Lesson 1-1: Numeration
• Numbers in standard, expanded, and word form:
• Includes a short video on place value;
• Several interactive activities using virtual manipulatives;
• An interactive game that can be used as a center or a whole class activity;
• A mini-assessment using ActivExpressions or ActivVotes
Lesson 1-2: Ways to Name Numbers
• Virtual manipulatives to model, practice, and illustrate concepts;
• “Magic tricks” to maximize student engagement and cement abstract ideas;
• A short game that can be used in small group or as a whole class.
Lesson 1-3: Greater Numbers
• Links previous lessons with new lesson;
• Place value chart that “magically” makes a number appear in expanded form;
• 5 and 6 digit numbers that are layered and can be taken apart and put together again to experiment with building numbers and the meaning of place value.
• An number building activity that can be used with the whole class or as a center.
Lesson 1-4: Compare Numbers
• Students use interactive manipulatives to compare numbers;
• “Magic” arrow explains how to compare large numbers;
• Interactive activity comparing numbers using number generators and virtual manipulatives; can be used as a whole class activity or as a center.
Lesson 1-5: Ordering Numbers
• Warm up activity to introduce how/why to put things in order;
• Manipulatives to model numbers to help visualize numbers from least to greatest or greatest to least;
• Six links to websites that support place value learned in these 5 lessons.

• Dress Poindexter to see how many different outfits he can have;
• Number riddles;
• Make an organized list to line up cows as many ways as possible—also included are printable manipulatives if desired, or you can use the free cows in my store;
• Links to Illumination lesson as well as additional number riddles.
