Learning time is an important life skill for independence. This adapted book is based on typical school transition times which makes it more relatable and useful for everyday life. The students are asked to move the big hand and small hands to match the time on the book page, or add numbers on the digital clock to match the time in words (ex. half past 12). I created this for my special education class, however I'm sure it would work for primary student math as well!
What is an Adapted Book?
Adapted books are books that are modified to fit a child's specific needs. They usually include visual supports and tactile objects that allow the student to actively participate in the book.
Adapted Book Benefits:
- Increased story comprehension
- Higher engagement
- Matching pictures practice
- Build fluency with frequently used sight words or personally meaningful words to the child
- Build vocabulary
- Could be used to teach a skill (ex. Social Story)
How to use this resource:
- Print, Cut & laminate each sheet and each clock hand & numbers so you can use it year after year & student after student!
- Add hard velcro on the back of the PECs & soft velcro on the squares of the book and also on the clock.
- Bind together with coils OR hole punch for duotang/binder.
- Read with student, encouraging them to point to the words.
- Digital Clock: Student can remove the numbers from the PEC Page (Slides 19 & 20) and put on the rectangles on the page to match the time.
- Clock: Student can remove 2 hands from the PEC Page (Slides 33) and put on the clock on the page to match the time.

Clock Hand PECs: Slide 33
Blank Digital & Clock (if you wish to modify to your school times by adding it using a dry erase marker): Slides 34-55
