Description

This matching activity will reinforce how to combine fractional parts to make a whole when adding mixed numbers. Watch your students make deep connections as they match the mixed number cards together and create whole number sums in many different ways!

Place the whole number mats and cards at your small group table and have students solve one mat at a time. I usually had mine solve two mats during this math center. There are also fractions with unlike denominators for your advanced students and/or for 5th graders!

This product includes:

6 sorting mats with sums 5-10 (color and black & white)

10 mixed number cards for each activity board (both like and unlike denominators are included!)

Answer keys

A digital version in Google Slides with like and unlike denominators

To turn this into a file folder activity:

•Print on card stock and laminate

•Cut out mixed number cards on each page

•Place Velcro on the back of each card and square space

Add and subtract mixed numbers with like denominators, e.g., by replacing each mixed number with an equivalent fraction, and/or by using properties of operations and the relationship between addition and subtraction.
Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators. For example, 2/3 + 5/4 = 8/12 + 15/12 = 23/12. (In general, 𝘢/𝘣 + 𝘤/𝘥 = (𝘢𝘥 + 𝘣𝘤)/𝘣𝘥.)
