Description

In this worksheet, I included step-by-step instructions on how to add unlike fractions. This worksheet helps students learn and practice how to add like and unlike fractions and gives them practice in simplifying them. For fractions with a numerator bigger than its denominator, the instructions tell them not to simplify. This worksheet involves the intermediate step between adding like fractions and converting improper fractions to proper fractions.

This pack also includes 11 problems for students to solve and an answer key for teachers/parents. This worksheet is an excellent tool for teaching students how to add and simplify unlike fractions, class quizzes, or homework.

This small packet is also excellent for home-schooled students and parents teaching from home. I have included examples that show how I have worked the problems step-by-step. So, it's a great refresher, and it will help teachers/tutors/parents be able to help students break the problems down and explain what to do.

Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators. For example, 2/3 + 5/4 = 8/12 + 15/12 = 23/12. (In general, 𝘒/𝘣 + 𝘀/π˜₯ = (𝘒π˜₯ + 𝘣𝘀)/𝘣π˜₯.)
Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions referring to the same whole, including cases of unlike denominators, e.g., by using visual fraction models or equations to represent the problem. Use benchmark fractions and number sense of fractions to estimate mentally and assess the reasonableness of answers. For example, recognize an incorrect result 2/5 + 1/2 = 3/7, by observing that 3/7 < 1/2.
