Description
This is the perfect introduction to adding integers!
Materials Included:
- Adding Integers Student Notes with Examples
- Notes Answer Key Provided
- DIGITAL SELF-CHECKING 9 Question Activity (Mystery Riddle)
- Student Work Page for Digital Activity
- Answer Key Provided for Digital Activity
The student notes (front and back) provide an introduction to additive inverses and adding integers. I have students use physical manipulatives (such as two-colored chips) to demonstrate the positives and negatives when developing the rule for adding integers. Following development of the rule, we discuss the vocabulary. Additional examples then allow for student application of the rules they developed. Finally, there are story problems for real-world connection. The answer key is provided.
Following the notes, students can demonstrate their understanding of the content using the self-checking digital mystery riddle. There are 9 addition questions. A student work page and answer key are included.
Please keep in mind that students will each need their own copy of the digital activity. This can be done several different ways depending on the technology in your classroom.
Students simply need to type their answer into the answer box. If they are correct, the box will turn green and part of the mystery picture will appear. If they are incorrect, the box will turn red and they need to try again. When they finish all 9 questions, they will have the answer to the riddle in the revealed picture.
I also provided a student work page. This can be used if you decide to use this as an outside of school assignment and a student does not have Internet access. Some of my students prefer to have the questions on paper as well, so I always provide both options. I encourage all students to use this paper to show their work.
Getting Started:
- Print 1 copy of the student notes (front and back) and student work page per student.
- Complete the notes together as a class.
- Students complete digital self-checking mystery riddle activity to demonstrate their understanding while having fun.
Special Thanks to Lindsay Bowden for providing an awesome template for the mystery picture activity!
