"Worked well with my students. Funny thing is for as smart as they are (merit level), when they flipped the paper over some of them could not figure out which column was theirs since it was not labeled A/B on the back, lol. "

"I thought it was a great way for students to work independently and then come together with their partner to check for understanding."

Description

Students will pair up to add and subtract positive & negative rational numbers (decimals & fractions). Even though each student will be solving their own problem, all answers will be the same! This activity is differentiated into two parts:

  • Worksheet A and B are the easier versions. Students will adding and subtracting decimals or fractions. They won’t be combined.

  • Worksheet C and D are more difficult as they require students add and subtract decimals and fractions together.

What's included:

Student worksheets (4 versions) and answer key

Strategies for Teachers:

Use this as a tool to group your students. You can give the same letter to students you don't want working together and allow the class to select another person, who doesn't have their letter, to work with.

This activity provokes conversation when students don't get the same answer. It forces them to talk to each other before they ask for help! And what teacher doesn't want that!

This was great practice after our lesson about adding and subtracting! The students liked being able to check with each other and find each other's mistakes when their answers didn't match.

This is a great partner, self-checking activity. Students worked in pairs and I head a lot of great discussions when the answers didn't match.
