Description

Are you searching for a step-by-step PowerPoint that can be used to introduce fraction concepts to your 5th grade students in a way that will grab their attention? You've come to the right place! This 44-slide PowerPoint will introduce your students to many of the fraction skills identified in the 5th Grade Common Core State Standards. It covers adding fractions with unlike denominators, adding mixed numbers with unlike denominators, adding mixed numbers with regrouping, subtracting fractions with unlike denominators, subtracting mixed numbers with unlike denominators, and subtracting mixed numbers with regrouping. Addition and subtraction word problems with fractions are also included. Each section includes many practice problems. Plus, this resource comes with a bonus set of exit tickets!

PowerPoints filled with visuals are ideal for teaching new content to students because PowerPoints tend to be highly engaging and concepts can be easily broken down into understandable chunks of information. But let's face it... they are so time-consuming to create! Fortunately, now you have an option of using one that is already complete, kid-tested, and ready to go for you!

This PowerPoint is designed to be used over the course of 4 days. Each day, use this PowerPoint to introduce a different fraction concept.

  1. Adding and Subtracting Fractions (with unlike denominators)
  2. Adding Mixed Numbers (with unlike denominators & regrouping)
  3. Subtracting Mixed Numbers (with unlike denominators & regrouping)
  4. Fraction Word Problems (with adding & subtracting)

Each section contains MANY practice opportunities!

This PowerPoint contains TWO EXTRA BONUS FEATURES!!

  1. A PowerPoint companion handout is included in this file. As you advance through the PowerPoint, students can record their answers on the handout. The companion handout is available in both printable format or digital format. The digital version is compatible with Google Slides.
  2. After each section of the PowerPoint, hand out a half-sheet exit slip and have students complete it independently. When you correct the exit slips, you are presented with immediate feedback on which students might need additional small group or individual instruction. The exit tickets are available in both printable format or digital format, as well.

Here's what teachers like you have to say about this fractions PowerPoint:

⭐️ Jill L. said, "This was a great resource to use with my students as we were working through how to solve problems with fractions. There were great details with the step-by-step directions that really helped my students."

⭐️ Sarah S. said, "One of my favorite resources I have purchased on TPT! The step-by-step problems are fantastic for teaching the multiple steps needed to solve mixed number problems."

⭐️ Christina Go. said, "The PowerPoint in itself was absolutely amazing and I was wishing the entire time I had found this prior to this summer and could have let my [former] students experience this in the classroom! I will certainly use it exactly as it was intended to be used when we are back in a classroom. A lot of work went into this and it was done very well.

⭐️ Cari S. said, "I used this along with my curriculum to teach adding and subtracting fractions to my fully virtual fifth-grade class. I knew it would be great because I've used the mult/dividing version for a few years now and love it. This one also is excellent."

Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators. For example, 2/3 + 5/4 = 8/12 + 15/12 = 23/12. (In general, 𝘢/𝘣 + 𝘤/𝘥 = (𝘢𝘥 + 𝘣𝘤)/𝘣𝘥.)
Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions referring to the same whole, including cases of unlike denominators, e.g., by using visual fraction models or equations to represent the problem. Use benchmark fractions and number sense of fractions to estimate mentally and assess the reasonableness of answers. For example, recognize an incorrect result 2/5 + 1/2 = 3/7, by observing that 3/7 < 1/2.
