Description
This resource simplifies the concept of adding and subtracting negative values. Students will grasp the nuances of integer arithmetic, through tactile interaction and visualization.
What's Inside:
- Math Mat: The math mat features a number line and 2 items to cut out - a rectangle and an arrow.
- Cut-Outs: Two sheets filled with pieces with values on them, ranging from +1 to +5 and -1 to -5, respectively. These items represent integer values during problem-solving.
- Problem Sheet: 10 problems focused on adding and subtracting negative integers guides students on their journey. Students will use the math mats and cut outs to show how to solve each of the 10 problems.
How It Works:
- Start with the provided problem sheet.
- Identify the required negative and/or positive rectangle pieces corresponding to the problem in hand.
- Place these pieces in the designated boxes on the math mat.
- Begin with the arrow and small rectangle at 0 on the number line. For a problem like 1 - 4, shift the arrow +1 unit and then -4 units. This helps students visualize that the sum is -3.

My students loved this resource! I plan to use it from year to year! Thank you!
This was a great resource to use for review for the EOG with my EC students. Loved it!
INTEGERS if not really learned well and with thinking and not just rules will haunt you for the rest of your math career - This is a great resource to reinforce the concrete and hard rules of integers. It is a wonderful review or reteach tool in case they needed to see it and hear it in a new way :)
Love it!

CCSS7.NS.A.1
Apply and extend previous understandings of addition and subtraction to add and subtract rational numbers; represent addition and subtraction on a horizontal or vertical number line diagram.
CCSS7.NS.A.1a
Describe situations in which opposite quantities combine to make 0. For example, a hydrogen atom has 0 charge because its two constituents are oppositely charged.
CCSS7.NS.A.1c
Understand subtraction of rational numbers as adding the additive inverse, 𝘱 – 𝘲 = 𝘱 + (–𝘲). Show that the distance between two rational numbers on the number line is the absolute value of their difference, and apply this principle in real-world contexts.
