Description

Are you looking for a fun way for your students to practice first grade place value skills? You'll love this set of 24 winter math mystery number riddles and activities for finding ten more and ten less than multiples of ten.

Here's what you'll get in this set:

24 task cards for adding and subtracting ten to and from multiples of ten within 120 will strengthen your first graders’ skills in place value as well as operations and algebraic thinking. Each card has three clues. Choosing from four numbers on each card, your students will determine the snowman’s secret number by eliminating one of the four options with each clue they solve.

120 chart for support and differentiation

☃ The same 24 riddles in a printable worksheet format (four riddles per page). Great for standardized test prep, substitute teachers, and students who were absent when you introduced the cards. Also perfect for sending with students who are going on extended family vacations!

☃ Want a digital option? You've got it! Use the 24-slide PowerPoint presentation on your interactive board, laptop, or handheld devices, with your own favorite apps.

Nine puzzles for matching a multiple of ten with an equivalent addition expression and subtraction expression. Great for hands-on practice in a math center or math tub!

Four pages to connect math with writing. Students will decide if the answer to a riddle is correct and defend their opinion in writing.

Student recording page and answer key

Four in a Row Game: add two numbers and then add ten to the sum

Here are some ways that you might use these add ten / subtract ten activities in your classroom!

Use in a math center for individual or partner work.
Use with your document camera for whole class review or to focus attention at the beginning of a math lesson.
Use as a skills review rotation, individually or with partners, with students moving to stations around the classroom to solve the clues (aka Scoot!).
Use for morning “bell ringers”.
Use as challenge work or for early finishers.
