The “ADDITION FACT STRATEGIES RACING TEAM” was created based on the Common Core and uses best practices and proven research from Everyday Math, Singapore Math, Otter Creek Mastering Addition Facts, Greg Tang, and more. It incorporates using different manipulatives that include ten frames, number lines, dominoes, fact families and especially mental math.
In my 1st Component “My Addition Fact Strategies Book,” students (racers or drivers) will be excited to participate in the “Qualifying Laps” where they will learn about 9 different addition fact strategies. After all the strategies “Qualifying Laps” have been passed, they will earn their “Addition Facts Racing Driver’s License.” Each addition fact strategy is represented by a different pit crew member. Each member has an “I Can” poster to teach the strategy and a nine problem quiz to assess the strategy with the “I Can” statement and pit crew member on the top. The posters can be used in a book for your racers and also to teach the strategy with the class. I teach the strategies in the order presented.
In my 2nd component “Addition Fact Strategies Races,” the drivers will use the strategies learned in “My Addition Fact Strategies Book,” and apply it with “Turn Around Facts” using fact families. After completing all the races, drivers will earn an “Addition Fact Strategies Racing Champion Certificate.” There are 2 versions, one for a boy and one for a girl. Each addition fact strategy is represented by a different pit crew member. *The “Addition Facts Racing Triangles” uses one of the pit crew members that originally taught an addition strategy on one of the two facts on the fact triangle during the “Qualifying Laps” in “My Addition Fact Strategies Book.” Students will learn quickly that there are several different strategies to solve a fact. I want them to have an understanding of the math strategies, but also become quick with the strategy that will help them learn all the facts fluently. *The “Addition Facts Racing Triangles” that are included in this packet are aligned to Otter Creek’s “Mastering Addition Facts Program.” The program has one-minute timed tests available for each of the races. It comes with a “rocket” to write when the tests are given and a space to color in when they are passed. I have included a racing theme chart to monitor progress with this program. I have the track for students and dates the tests are given on another sheet. You can make it a 2-sided copy or keep the test date chart for only your own records. I also included a class list, so you can see the progress of your entire class in a single snapshot!
In my 3rd component “What’s My Strategy?” the racers have a large fact family triangle where they must decide which addition fact they want to solve and then choose a fact strategy they want to use to solve the problem. This activity is structured for math stations and will last throughout the year. It comes with a “Qualifying Lap” pretest, essential question, “I Can Poster,” and 3 differentiated versions of the same fact triangle (all 3 numbers on a triangle, missing sums, and missing addends). It has a printable where they will circle the picture that matches their chosen strategy, write a number sentence with their chosen fact, and show work of using the strategy to solve the addition fact. There is also a printable that only focuses on one strategy at a time. This is great to use when teaching addition strategies for the first time with the fact families. The fact triangles go in the same order as Otter Creek’s Mastering Addition Facts Program.
* Each addition fact strategy is represented by a different pit crew member. All of the components in the “ADDITION FACT STRATEGIES RACING TEAM” use the same pit crew members for each strategy to reinforce the addition fact strategies.
