Addition Number Sentence or Fast Facts Sort

Increase their fluency!

These activities are amazing for helping students start to think of the strategies they know before resorting to their fingers! They also help them start recognizing patterns in some of these common strategies.

These can be used as a whole class, with a partner or as an independent practice.

I have included 3 different possible tables for sorting based on what strategies you are focusing on.

1. Sort by combinations of ten, doubles and other facts.
2. Sort by doubles, doubles + 1, or other.
3. A combination of all the strategies- Sort by combinations of ten, doubles, doubles +1 and other.

I have also included 2 different ways for obtaining the numbers 0-10:

-A sheet with small number cards. You could copy and quickly cut these up or have your students do it. Save them in a little baggie or cup to be used again.

-2 spinners that students could use with a pencil and paper clip, or you could also laminate them and spin with a paper clip around a brad.

Hope these are helpful. I feel like this activity made a HUGE difference in my students fluency last year!

Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. Use strategies such as counting on; making ten (e.g., 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14); decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13 - 4 = 13 - 3 - 1 = 10 - 1 = 9); using the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12, one knows 12 - 8 = 4); and creating equivalent but easier or known sums (e.g., adding 6 + 7 by creating the known equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13).
Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies. By end of Grade 2, know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers.
