Description
Addition Strategy Sorting Mat: Building Number Sense
Number sense is a foundational skill that supports students in developing flexible thinking about numbers, enabling them to perform mental addition efficiently. The strategy sorting mat can be used in multiple ways—such as for progress monitoring of student strategies, in small group instruction, or as an engaging math center activity. Following explicit instruction in mental addition strategies—whether through core or tiered interventions—students are ready to engage with the strategy sorting mat. At this stage, they should be able to articulate their reasoning, identify the strategies they are using, and accurately solve problems. This resource also serves as a scaffold to support students in progressing toward more efficient mathematical strategies.
Resources includes:
Two leveled sorting mats for K-3rd.
Each of the two mats includes a teacher version and a student version
Four levels of addition questions
Reporting Sheet for Progress Monitoring
For best use, print multiple copies and laminate.
