Description

This is a set of activities and games to use at your teacher table with small groups during your Guided Math time. The great thing about Guided Math is that you get to teach skills to small groups based on where their math skills are. You don’t need to do all of the activities or do them in order—just pick and choose what your groups need to work on.

These are six specific outcomes that are covered in this unit:

•Add/Subtract 0/1/2 to 20

•Making 5/10

•Flip Flops/Fact Families to 20

•Count On/Count Back to 20

•Doubles/Near Doubles to 20

•Equality

For each outcome, there are four lesson activities and one game for a total of 30 lessons. Each lesson has an optional recording sheet that comes in two formats--a full-page to put in a duotang or binder and a half-page that can be glued into a notebook. Each of the activities/games comes in full colour or black & white to save you on ink.

When students meet at the teacher table for Guided Math, they are grouped based on a shared skill they need to work on. When working on addition and subtraction skills, you will have some students who will need tools (number lines, counters, fingers, etc.) to help them add/subtract to 10 while others can add/subtract to 20 in their heads! Each of the activities in this unit can be differentiated to meet the needs of all your students.

This unit includes all the pieces you will need. There are just some regular math manipulatives you might need, such as dice, game markers, unifix/counting cubes, and math counters of your choice (mini erasers, bears, etc.).

This unit aligns well with Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba first grade math curriculums, but can be used with any curriculum that has a focus on addition and subtraction to 20.

*Updated* This unit comes with two files now--the original PDF version and an editable PowerPoint version. If you teach Math in another language (French, German, or Spanish perhaps?) you can edit the text boxes on the student pages to meet your needs. The teacher information pages are not editable, but all the student pages are! You do need to have PowerPoint in order to edit the file.

These tasks were great for my EA led centre. The instructions were easy for them to follow and I like how the tasks were scaffolded.

This has been such an excellent addition to my guided math routine. My students enjoy all of the activities and there are plenty to allow for extra practice.
