Description
This lesson introduces complex numbers and relates them to real numbers and imaginary numbers. Students are also introduced to the complex plane.
The basic operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of complex numbers are explained. For division, the concept of the conjugate of a complex number is included.
Finally, it is noted that complex numbers cannot be ordered and the equality of complex numbers is defined.
This lesson is appropriate for Algebra 2, though it could also be used in an Honors Algebra 1 class or as a review in Precalculus.
A detailed answer key is included.
The topics covered include:
-Definition of Complex Numbers
-The Complex Plane
-Plotting Complex Numbers
-Adding and Subtracting Complex Numbers
-Multiplying Complex Numbers
-Verifying Complex Solutions to Equations
-The Complex Conjugate
-Dividing Complex Numbers
-Complex Numbers Cannot be Ordered
-Equality of Complex Numbers
In this product, you will find the following:
-Powerpoint Presentation (25 slides)
-Guided Notes (4 pages, a "filled in" copy is also included)
-Do Now Slips (4 slips on one page, answers included)
-Exit Ticket Slips (4 slips on one page, answers included)
-Homework Assignment (2 pages, a detailed answer key is included)
This lesson is part of a larger unit on Complex Numbers. The complete unit includes the following:
-Imaginary Numbers
-Complex Number Arithmetic
