Algebra 2 - Graphing Rational Functions Task Card Activity

Description

This is an EDITABLE set of 16 task cards for an Algebra 2 math class. The task cards should be printed double-sided with the shorter side being the flipping side so that the answer key is on the back. It is suggested that they are printed on cardstock for long term use.

Using these cards, students will be able to:

  • graph rational functions with vertical, horizontal, and oblique asymptotes
  • graph a rational function that has point discontinuity

In this activity, students will be guided through:

  • graph rational functions with vertical, horizontal, and oblique asymptotes (5 cards)
  • graph a rational function that has point discontinuity (1 card)

This resource:

  • can be used for a single student (can use them as just task cards), partner, or group
  • when printed correctly will have the answer key on the back for self-checking
  • teachers should print and cut task cards in advance and mix them up for each group
  • this is a great resource for laminating - have student graph with a dry-erase marker and then wipe off! Students can rotate each problem with a group until they complete all 6

Create equations in two or more variables to represent relationships between quantities; graph equations on coordinate axes with labels and scales.
Compare properties of two functions each represented in a different way (algebraically, graphically, numerically in tables, or by verbal descriptions). For example, given a graph of one quadratic function and an algebraic expression for another, say which has the larger maximum.
Look for and make use of structure. Mathematically proficient students look closely to discern a pattern or structure. Young students, for example, might notice that three and seven more is the same amount as seven and three more, or they may sort a collection of shapes according to how many sides the shapes have. Later, students will see 7 × 8 equals the well remembered 7 × 5 + 7 × 3, in preparation for learning about the distributive property. In the expression 𝑥² + 9𝑥 + 14, older students can see the 14 as 2 × 7 and the 9 as 2 + 7. They recognize the significance of an existing line in a geometric figure and can use the strategy of drawing an auxiliary line for solving problems. They also can step back for an overview and shift perspective. They can see complicated things, such as some algebraic expressions, as single objects or as being composed of several objects. For example, they can see 5 – 3(𝑥 – 𝑦)² as 5 minus a positive number times a square and use that to realize that its value cannot be more than 5 for any real numbers 𝑥 and 𝑦.
