It's the Luck of the Draw for your Algebra students with this St. Patrick's Day activity on Exponential Growth & Decay with word problems themed for St. Patty's. This self-checking digital card game features 12 questions to help students practice modeling exponential growth and decay.

Students will feel the charm this St. Patrick's day with this exciting card game!

CONCEPTS AND PROBLEM TYPES:

  • Exponential growth with whole-number growth rates (i.e. doubles)
  • Exponential growth with percentage growth (i.e. increases 20%)
  • Exponential decay with percentage decrease (i.e. loses 5%)
  • Exponential decay with fractional remainder (1/2 left)
  • 9 of the problems are simply evaluating based on the rate, starting value and amount of time
  • 3 of the problems will require students to guess & check, use a table, or otherwise solve for the amount of time or starting value (they are not required to know or use logarithms)

For students, Luck of the Draw makes mastering the art of writing and solving exponential word problems a ton of fun while ensuring students enjoy a unique competitive Card Game experience!

How the activity works

In the game "Luck of the Draw" students will test their luck and their knowledge of Exponential growth and decay. They will receive instant feedback and be dealt a new card with each correct answer, building hands of four-cards.

They will rack up points by getting sets of the same card or by getting a color-streak. The card deck is made up of 64 cards, 4 colors, and 16 unique St. Patrick's Day themed images. As they answer all 12 questions in this activity, students will make 3 sets of 4 cards and earn points for each hand. At the end, they will be given bonus points by combining all 3 hands into one mega-hand. The student with the most points at the end wins. You can have students compete in small groups, pairs, or as a whole class.

  • Task card problems appear as drop down menus, ensuring each question is easily readable
