Algorithm Alley (Distance Learning) Updated and Revised 12-28-21tested

A presentation with three learning activities.

Algorithms are like recipes. They allow programmers to plan a process or system, prior to coding.

This module contains an interactive presentation describing algorithms and flowcharts as well as three activities you can use in the classroom. Each activity is a PDF document.

1. A Robot Sandwich - Each student writes down the steps needed to make a peanut butter sandwich. The algorithm is then testing and refined.

2. Tie Your Shoes - There are two different ways to tie shoes. After watching a Ted Talk video on the correct way, the students pair off into teams, writing an algorithm of the process.

3. The Window Washing Trick - Use this trick to find out what side of a window streaks are on. The students write an algorithm describing the process and then draw a flowchart showing where the decision points are as well as the loops for repeating tasks.

Each activity includes discussion questions with possible answers. The discussion highlights important concepts such as:

-- The power of collaborative problem-solving

-- Usability testing

-- Object-oriented programming (OOP)

-- The importance of visualizing a project before you begin to code.

  • What is an algorithm?
  • Examples of algorithms in action. Amazon, Netflix, facial recognition
  • Order Matters - arrange the steps for baking cupcakes
  • Building a Road - What happens when instructions from a client are vague
  • Don't program in the dark - Using algorithms and flow charts to visualize a program.
  • Different Strokes - Comparing a written algorithm with a flow chart
  • Summary

The interactive presentation includes four formats:

1) SCORM version that can be uploaded to your LMS such as Canvas and Moodle

2) HTML version that can be uploaded to your website or LMS.

3) PDF

4) Video with narration and closed-captioning - Hosted on EduVision, an educational-safe video platform without tracking or ads.
