Description
Are you tired of having students create their own periodic table as the final project in your periodic trends unit? Want to implement something that feels like less of a craft project and has students actually using periodic trends to solve a problem?
Look no further!
This four part assignment really does it all, and best part- NO PREP
Completely customizable (name your own alien elements?!) and scaffolded out with exemplar slides and guided steps on solving. This can be used as either a remediation or summative assessment
Parts of the Project:
Part 1: Determine the periodic trends of different alien elements based on information about their properties
Part 2: Select a space catastrophe and create your own alien element that can be used to solve the problem
Part 3: Choose which set of data would belong to their alien element based off of that element's periodic trends
Part 4: Defend your alien element in a CER and explain how your selected properties solve the space catastrophe
This project covers atomic size, ionization energy, reactivity/metallic character, and electronegativity
This is a staple in my own classroom and students love that the elements are named after their teachers!
