Description

Animal Structures and Functions, Vertebrates vs. Invertebrates, Classification, animal adaptation ... where do you begin? Why... here! Challenge your students to become ZOOLOGISTS... as they study terms like structure, function, vertebrates, invertebrates and more by analyzing animal x-rays! This resource is a FULL UNIT AND PROJECT that includes everything you could need: student materials, x-rays, NGSS standards information, teaching slides, vocabulary posters, printable learning games and an assessment... we have you covered!

Hands on learning through this "Become a Zoologist" Project is the ULTIMATE way to show that animals have unique internal and external structures they help them survive, grow, behave and reproduce. Students will be motivated and engaged to receive their "x-ray patient files" on 8 different animals, and analyze each of them. With clear, guided steps to help you teach the concepts along the way and for students to tackle the learning assignments, there is truly no shortage of resources stacked into this full unit.

Focusing on over 30 key terms like endoskeleton and exoskeleton, vertebrate and invertebrate and more, this project is not only fun but a great way to get kids engaged with current science expectations that align with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Speaking of, enjoy included standards-aligned pages for grades 3 through 4, outlining the standards that mainly align with this project. Easily pick and choose which vocabulary words or sets to use depending on the age or desired depth you would like to get in to as well.

With this loaded project set, you will have EVERYTHING that you need to teach the concepts and guide students into self-led, small exploration groups or complete the project individually. ⭐No supplementing required, because this includes it all!⭐ With weeks of teaching, project, and vocabulary materials to create supporting anchor charts or bulletin boards, you can set the pace and expectations for how basic or in-depth you would like the unit to go.

Standards

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
NGSS4-LS1-1
Construct an argument that plants and animals have internal and external structures that function to support survival, growth, behavior, and reproduction. Examples of structures could include thorns, stems, roots, colored petals, heart, stomach, lung, brain, and skin. Assessment is limited to macroscopic structures within plant and animal systems.
NGSS3-LS4-2
Use evidence to construct an explanation for how the variations in characteristics among individuals of the same species may provide advantages in surviving, finding mates, and reproducing. Examples of cause and effect relationships could be plants that have larger thorns than other plants may be less likely to be eaten by predators; and, animals that have better camouflage coloration than other animals may be more likely to survive and therefore more likely to leave offspring.
