Description

Engaging, differentiated self checking math review activity to practice approximating irrational numbers.

The level up activity provides three levels of practice. The levels are scaffolded to provide differentiation. As students answer questions correctly, the box will turn green and students will be provided points to level up. If students answer incorrectly, the box will remain white to notify students they made a mistake and no points are awarded. If all questions are answered correctly, students will be encouraged to level up to the next level of mastery. Printable worksheets are included to provide a place for students to show their work.

Three Levels of Scaffolded Practice...

♦ Level 1: Approximating to the nearest whole number

♦ Level 2: Approximating to the nearest tenth

♦ Level 3: Approximating to the nearest hundredth

The Approximating Irrational Numbers Level Up Activity is great for classwork, homework, or for a test review. You can assign only one level or multiple levels to students to provide the differentiation needed. Answer key is provided.

Know that numbers that are not rational are called irrational. Understand informally that every number has a decimal expansion; for rational numbers show that the decimal expansion repeats eventually, and convert a decimal expansion which repeats eventually into a rational number.
Use rational approximations of irrational numbers to compare the size of irrational numbers, locate them approximately on a number line diagram, and estimate the value of expressions (e.g., π²). For example, by truncating the decimal expansion of √2, show that √2 is between 1 and 2, then between 1.4 and 1.5, and explain how to continue on to get better approximations.
