Description

Perfect for engaging students with math on Halloween! This activity includes 36 pairs of square root approximations for students to match. There are multiple ways to use this resource with your class.

In this card match, each pair has a square root of a non-perfect square on the top of a pumpkin and an approximation of the square root on the bottom of the pumpkin. All of the square roots are between 1 and 144. All of the approximations are in decimal form and rounded to the nearest tenth.

How to use this resource:

Give each group of students a set of the cards. You may give less pairs depending on time, ability, and number of students. Have students take turns matching the pumpkin pieces so that the square root matches with the closest approximate decimal. Students should not use a calculator for this activity, but should use what they know about square roots of perfect squares.

Other ways to use this resource:

  • Pair Up: Give each student a piece of a pumpkin and they have to find their partner by finding a match.
  • Find the approximation: Give each student a top piece of a pumpkin (the square root) and they have to look around the room to find their bottom piece (the approximation).
  • Matching Worksheet: Print a page or 2 for each student and have them draw a line connecting the square root to it's correct approximation.

What's included:

  • 36 color pumpkin pairs (72 cards)
  • 36 black & white pumpkin pairs (72 cards)
  • Answer Key for quick checking

Your students will love practicing square roots this fall with this matching game. They will be able to work in groups and have mathematical discussions to show their thinking.

This resource is meant to practice the following skills:

  • I can use rational approximations of irrational numbers to estimate the value of expressions.
  • I can truncate the decimal expansion of a square root.

This was a great activity for 6th, 7th & 8th graders! The 6th graders were challenged, and though the 8th graders felt it was "easy," they actually commented on it being good practice. Always good to get up and move around too! Thank you.

I had my students partner up and work together to work out the math and then glue the pumpkins correctly on another sheet of paper. They were engaged, lots of discussion, and independent. I'm very pleased with this resource and the opportunities for learning it provided in my classroom.

Use rational approximations of irrational numbers to compare the size of irrational numbers, locate them approximately on a number line diagram, and estimate the value of expressions (e.g., π²). For example, by truncating the decimal expansion of √2, show that √2 is between 1 and 2, then between 1.4 and 1.5, and explain how to continue on to get better approximations.
