ANSWER KEY & UNIT INSTRUCTIONS: Scalable Architecture Packet with Floor Plan Project Unit (25 pages)

An 8th Grade Favorite!

This is the Answer Key and Instructions ONLY for an in-depth fantastic project for 8th graders that can be adjusted to span 1 to 8 weeks (and possibly even longer). It is tested and super scalable.

Students will redesign their own bedroom from concept to implementation.

When finished with the entire project, students will be able to:

Create a quick architectural sketch

Estimate sizes of rooms and furniture

Use a ruler and a tape measure accurately

Understand square inches, square feet and square yards and be able to calculate and label each

Add the areas of objects together

Understand and calculate construction costs of a bedroom

Understand basic items that make up a bedroom

Understand some building code regulations

Shop for furniture and other items within a budget

Make trade-offs

Contemplate wants and needs

Understand what sustainable items are and how they are used

Find specifications, price and dimensions of a product on an online store

Calculate flooring costs and develop a flooring preference

Understand what soundproofing is for and calculate the square footage and cost of soundproofing

Add all of these costs together and stay within a budget

Reflect on choices and journal what you would do differently in the future

Learn about architectural lettering and practice it

Develop their own architectural lettering style

Summarize their design in words and write with architectural lettering

Use drawing tools

Create a 1” = 1’ floor plan of a bedroom using architectural symbols and lettering to scale
