Description

You can use these simple, nonfiction reading passages with non-readers and fluent readers. You can use them during whole group or guided reading groups. Here are some ideas...

*Provide fluent readers with their own copies of the passage. Students can highlight passages and then record the information on category charts.

*Read aloud the passage to nonreaders. Create a class chart based on the facts.

*Ask beginning readers to highlight vocabulary words or sight words.

*Identify verbs and nouns and make lists. (For example, for polar bears, run hunt, swim could go on the verbs list. The nouns list could include fur, paws, and claws.)

*Project the passages or have them printed onto poster-sized paper for use with shared reading.

*Put all of the passages in a center to create an independent research area.

Animals included: polar bears, walruses, seals, beluga whales, orca whales, dall sheep, oxen, arctic foxes, caribou, arctic hares, puffins, narwhals

Teacher Testimonial: "The reading passages are the perfect level for my 1st graders. Thank you!"

"What a great packet for early "researchers"! Just what we needed to explore these animals in a fun, but meaningful way!"
