Description

Intrigue students with this scientific argumentation CER exercise using a fun topic-- cats! These editable interactive slides are ready to go to teach students how to write a CER (or in this case, ECR). Graphic organizers in the slides scaffold students in the step-by-step process of writing a CER using NGSS language. A teacher key is included which has example answers for both sides of the argument

This activity is great for learning about states of matter, phase changes, as a back to school CER refresher exercise or to just bust out of your back pocket whenever there is extra time for students to practice those much needed critical thinking and scientific writing skills. :)

Cats seem to be able to conform to the shape of the container they occupy--but can they be defined as liquids? Students dig deeper into the claim from a French physicist who won an Ig Nobel prize for his research in the flow of matter and cats, claiming that by definition, cats can be considered a liquid.

There are so many ways to make this a FUN, out of seat activity. Students can work with a partner, work in groups depending on which argument they side with, share evidence statements, do a gallery walk, have a debate showdown, etc...

This is a no prep lesson for digital learning. The CER lesson slides are ready to assign digitally through an LMS or as a display through class discussion

  • Flexible activity - Display on the board for whole class instruction, add to a digital or physical science journal, put students in pairs or teams
  • The slides are interactive - Can click on the buttons on the left side while presenting to be taken to another slide based on section (ask questions, investigate, evidence, claim, reasoning). There is also a movable arrow on the Claim slide for you/students to indicate stance in argument.
  • Student copy is non editable - The elements on the slides are in the background with text-boxes set in place with blue font.
  • Teacher copy is editable so you can modify to your classroom needs!
  • Teacher key - includes completed CER table with example answers for both claim outcomes: 1. Cats CAN be considered a liquid or 2. Cats CANNOT be considered a liquid.

Students are engaged with a questions, prompts & video clips. Then, move through the slides in order, following the prompts.

Slide Sequence:

  1. Cats Title slide
  2. Watch embedded video (1:09) of the Ig Nobel Prize being presented to Marc-Antoine Fardin for his research in the flow of matter regarding cats. Students are prompted with a question and introduced to the CER challenge to collect evidence to prove that cats either can/cannot be scientifically considered a liquid.
  3. Discussion prompt
  4. Watch video (1:20) Observe cute "liquid" cats in action
  5. Ask questions
  6. Investigate
  7. Collect 3 pieces of evidence
  8. Write a claim
  9. Provide a reasoning for each piece of evidence
  10. blank slide template
  11. Seller TOU information

There are so many ways to make this a FUN, out of seat activity too! Students can work with a partner, work in groups depending on which argument they side with. Have students work with like groups, then question students making the opposite claim. You could have students get up and stand on one side of the room based on their claim and have a debate showdown! (I also included this in the speaker notes where appropriate)

The Are Cats Liquids Google Drive Folder contains the following files:

  1. Teacher - Editable Are Cats Liquid CER Slides + Key (12 Slides + TOU)
  2. Student - Non-Editable CER Slides - (10 Slides)
