Description

Use this mini Math Project to help students develop an understanding of area measurement by designing their own pet store shop floor.

Preparation

- Select between differentiation options (outlined in the teacher instructions)

- Print and go!

- Optional: For a reusable idea to save paper, laminate the sheets and set it up with either washable markers if you choose for your students to draw the features. Otherwise, print, laminate and cut page 6 if you would like your students to use the pre-made stencils to complete this activity. This option would work well for a math center/station.

Differentiation Options

- There are premade stencils for students to cut, paste and arrange onto the grid. Great for a beginners activity to the concept of area.

- Increase the difficulty by adding the extra rules page and/or requiring students to measure and draw the store features onto the grid page themselves.

Sample answer page and instructions provided.

Color and B & W versions included.

Students loved the challenge of trying to set up a pet shore. They enjoyed the challenge of the Challenge Rules and it really helped promote strategic thinking.
