Description

🃏 Area Measurement Task Card Center

Materials

  • 56 task cards (each with a rectangle or square drawn, dimensions labeled)
  • Dry erase boards or math journals
  • Rulers (optional, if you want them to measure instead of just reading dimensions)
  • Answer key/check station

Activity Flow

  1. Pick a card: Each card shows a shape with given dimensions (length and width).
  2. Check the numbers: Students read the dimensions carefully.
  3. Multiply for area: Use the formula

Area=Length×Width\text{Area} = \text{Length} \times \text{Width}

Example: A rectangle 8 units × 7 units → Area = 56 square units.

  1. Record the answer: Write it on their sheet or board.
  2. Self-check: Compare with the answer key or peer-check.
  3. Move on: Grab the next card and repeat until time is up.

Differentiation Ideas

  • Beginner level: Use whole numbers only (e.g., 4 × 6).
  • Intermediate level: Include larger numbers or decimals (e.g., 12.5 × 8).
  • Advanced level: Add composite figures (two rectangles joined together).

Why It Works

  • Active learning: Students move through cards at their own pace.
  • Repetition: Reinforces multiplication and area formula.
  • Self-checking: Builds independence and confidence.
  • Scalable: Works for small groups, pairs, or individual practice.
