This resource is designed to explicitly teach students how to use the area model to represent and solve multiplication problems, supporting them to break numbers into place value parts and visualise how partial products combine to create a whole.
Rather than relying on guesswork or disconnected procedures, students use the area model to organise their thinking and make multiplication more manageable, helping them understand how numbers can be decomposed and recomposed. This approach strengthens place value understanding, promotes flexible thinking and supports students to choose efficient strategies when solving word problems.
