What does Sally’s “gradual release model” entail? 

• Each lesson packet follows an “I Do, We Do, You Do” format.  A math concept is introduced whole group, students then practice with a partner, and finish with independent work time.  This deliberate scaffolding keeps students from feeling defeated or frustrated! 
• Sally’s packets also build slowly in difficulty.  We meet students where they are, regardless of level.  As students gain confidence, the problems get progressively harder.  Not all students will complete all problems and that is by design!  
• Each packet finishes with a “Challenge Page” for anyone who needs something extra!  

How am I supposed to teach them to multiply 3-digit numbers when they can't multiply 1-digit numbers? Included in this bundle are six 4th grade lessons to lay a strong foundation for multiplication. In my experience, students come to 5th grade with weak fact fluency. The secret is to start small and build slowly. This unit takes kids from 2 x 1 digit problems to 3 x 3 digit problems in just 12 days!

The lessons in this unit alternate between numeric problems and word problems. This gives kids two full days to master one type of problem before the difficulty cranks up and the numbers get bigger. The scaffolded approach will have students of all levels multiplying with mastery in no time!
