"This was a fun way to give the students choices while I worked with groups. I used some of the activities with my small groups, but mostly let the class choose which parts they wanted to work on. Thank you!"

Description

Are you teaching area and perimeter? Are you looking for activities to enrich and challenge students or to use for fast finishers? I am passionate about finding ways to enrich and push those students who are ready for a challenge. This math menu includes 18 area and perimeter math projects.

I made the product with the intent of using it as enrichment for those students who are proficient with the skill. The activities are intended to challenge them and encourage them to use their creativity to work with real life math examples. I ask my students to complete a side dish first, then an entrée and finally they can complete a dessert activity. I included more dessert options because they require more supplies and/or technology. Feel free to just use the ones that you have the resources to offer.

Side Dishes: These projects are intended to be warm-up activities. They get students writing about the topic and exploring the math vocabulary.

Entree: These projects ask students to apply the skills they have learned to a real world math problem. These activities often require students to write about their problem solving strategy.

Dessert: These projects allow students to apply higher order thinking skills to create something that demonstrates their knowledge of the skill such as a game, poem, video, presentation, poster, etc.

You can organize the math menu in a couple of different ways:

Make a Binder: One way that this product can be used is by making a binder. Use the cover page and dividers that are provided to organize the projects in a binder. Each task is includes on a separate page. Students can take the binder back to their seat or work area.

Make a Bulletin Board: You can create a math menu bulletin board with a row for each of the categories of math projects. Students can look at the board to choose their project. The bulletin board can be changed out periodically for new skills.

Task Cards: Each task has its own task card and can be bound together with binder rings. Students can easily take the set of cards back to their desk or work area.

The menu was written for third grade but might also be used with an a mid-level struggling fourth grader.

My students just finished a unit on area and perimeter. These cards were perfect for assessing their understanding. I used them for center work. Thank you.

I used this for my early finishers students. This was something they were able to use with little direction from me and went along with my math curriculum.
