Description

Build deeper understanding of sequences with this Error Analysis Activity on Writing Explicit Formulas for Arithmetic and Geometric Sequences! Students analyze incorrect work, identify mistakes, and correct them, helping them truly understand how to write explicit formulas.

This resource includes 10 error analysis problems designed to target common misconceptions with both arithmetic and geometric sequences. Perfect for Algebra 1, this activity promotes critical thinking and meaningful math discussions.

What’s Included:

  • 10 error analysis problems (arithmetic & geometric sequences)
  • Students identify the error AND correct it
  • Printable PDF version
  • Editable Google Slides™ version
  • Complete answer key

Why Error Analysis Works:

  • Encourages higher-level thinking instead of memorization
  • Helps students identify and avoid common mistakes
  • Promotes math discussion and reasoning
  • Builds stronger conceptual understanding of sequences

This activity aligns well with:

CCSS:

  • F-IF.3: Recognize that sequences are functions, sometimes defined recursively, whose domain is a subset of the integers.

NGLS:

  • AI-F.IF.3: Recognize that a sequence is a function whose domain is a subset of the integers.

Recognize that sequences are functions, sometimes defined recursively, whose domain is a subset of the integers. For example, the Fibonacci sequence is defined recursively by 𝘧(0) = 𝘧(1) = 1, 𝘧(𝘯+1) = 𝘧(𝘯) + 𝘧(𝘯-1) for 𝘯 greater than or equal to 1.
