Description
This worksheet contains 22 task cards, each card with a pair of mathematical scenarios, one of which is an arithmetic scenario and one which is geometric.
The students must examine their cards and determine:
- Which is arithmetic and which is geometric.
- Draw a graph illustrating each circumstance.
- On some cards, graphs must be used to extrapolate information.
I use this to introduce the concept of arithmetic and geometric sequences. It’s a great way to visually illustrate the differences between the two (arithmetic has addition and subtraction implications, whereas geometric has multiplication and division aspects).
Some of the questions are VERY challenging. It is probably unnecessary to do all the questions, as they can take time. Sometimes, I do the easier questions and just show the others (that have quite large numbers/calculations) on my classroom smartboard to merely emphasize the point further or hit it home. The questions I think are challenging (complex scenarios, high numbers or hard to draw graphs) are 5, 6, 7, 10, 11, 12, 14, 21 and 22.
