Description

Rounding for students can be tricky. Most students are able to grasp the concept of the basic rule of rounding: Look one place value to the right of the number you are rounding and bump it up if the number to the right is 5 or higher and leave it be if the number to the right is 4 or lower. However, students often do not understand what to write once they have rounded. If they are asked to round to the nearest tenths place for instance, they may only write the number in the tenths place as opposed to additionally writing the numbers that precede it. Using a line segment can help to remedy this confusion. Astounding Rounding uses line segments with the endpoints and midpoints marked so your students can literally see where the number they are rounding falls. Thus making it easier to determine the correct way of recording the rounded number. This document will have your students round numbers to the nearest whole number (up to 4-digit numbers), the nearest tenth, and the nearest hundredth. There are 13 problems to round and record for each section (39 total) and an example is included for each section. There is also a teacher guide and a color-coded place value chart included to assist in your students' learning. Enjoy!
