Description

This first supplement to my Blues Warm Up Series is a great way to begin your rehearsals and reinforce the 12-Bar Blues Form, jazz articulation and style while developing improvisation skills.

The range for each instrument, especially brass, is not as high as the original blues warm up, thus more accessible by younger students (especially brass players).

This warm-up starts with horns playing whole notes on the root of each chord in a 12-bar B♭ blues, helping students hear and internalize the progression.

Next, 8 common jazz rhythms are introduced in 3 variations:

1. Played on the first note of the blues scale with jazz articulation

2. Voiced across the ensemble

3. Expanded using a few notes from the B♭, E♭ and F blues scales

The final 12 bars are open for improvisation.

What’s Included:

  • Swing-style & Rock-style warm-ups
  • Two complete conductor scores (Swing & Rock)
  • Blues scale sheets for each instrument
  • Stylistic articulation and interpretation guide
  • Multiple piano and bass part options to accommodate varying skill levels
  • Expanded instrumentation for non-traditional jazz instruments
  • Includes bonus teaching aids, rehearsal strategies, and extended rhythm section content
