LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION: STUDENTS, STUDENT TEACHERS, COLLEAGUES

Hi, Friends,

Have you ever experienced this? A student brings you a pile of last year’s materials, cavalierly plops them on your desk saying “I’ve brought you a present . . .” or “I’ve got a favor . . .” or “I’m sorry, I’m bringing you some work . . .”?  Do you have a student teacher that needs a letter of recommendation? Is a colleague of yours leaving? Inundated with too many requests at one time? I have put together a letter of recommendation request process that will help you more easily get through the student recommendation process AND write more effective letters of recommendation.

Students are first asked to think carefully about whom they ask to write their letters of recommendation. If students choose to request a letter from you, they must respond to a number of reflective questions and submit them for your approval. You then have the opportunity to either write the letter or decline. (Students have a new appreciation wheen they realize that you are not obliged to write a letter for them.) Should you choose to write the letter, students then gather their writing (OR other coursework that you deem appropriate) from your class, sift through, and annotate materials before submitting them to you. Because I ALWAYS personalize each letter of recommendation with a student's thought or excerpt from a piece of his or her work, the information students provide in the prior step is invaluable!

I've also included with this 46-page Google Doc download editable sample templates for a student teacher, teaching assistant, beginning teacher, and long-term colleague! Here's everything:
