Description

Inspired by a student who knew enough to tell me that fraction/division bars threw him for a loop... and a failed mid-class search to find what he needed.

Card sorts add critical thinking and interactivity: Match expression, divisor and answer to make ten true statements and solidify understanding of division in order of operations. Or present the same problems in a more portable (and online post-able!) format as PDF or Drive worksheet.

  • Card Sort Cards + Instructions
  • Worksheet Format (PDF and Drive formats)
  • Extension Activities
  • Blank cards for extension or teacher created problems.
  • Answer key

BONUS PDF:

6 open order of operations problems to foster critical thinking and analysis. Challenge students to choose a divisor or to create a new problem and then solve it.

Each problem includes 3 or 4 terms above the division bar, and one below.

Card sort includes 45 total cards + answer key ready for printing on seven 8.5 x 11 pages

Use parentheses, brackets, or braces in numerical expressions, and evaluate expressions with these symbols.
Evaluate expressions at specific values of their variables. Include expressions that arise from formulas used in real-world problems. Perform arithmetic operations, including those involving whole-number exponents, in the conventional order when there are no parentheses to specify a particular order (Order of Operations). For example, use the formulas V = s³ and A = 6 s² to find the volume and surface area of a cube with sides of length s = 1/2.
