Back to school STEM challenges that are fun, engaging, and sure to keep kids LOVING STEM from the very first week of school! Three are currently included! One more is on the way for kindergarten!

Back to School - Meet the Gears (2nd or 3rd grade STEM Challenge)

Back to school should be fun and engaging! Just add STEM and the book Meet the Gears: A Family of Engineers and you have a perfect match! Back to school is the perfect time to give STEM students a better understanding of the jobs that involve STEM! This book focuses on the various types of engineers! This book is a perfect to help students understand all of the various ways engineers are involved in so many aspects of STEM! This would be a great lesson for 2nd or 3rd grade students.
After reading the story Meet the Gears! A Family of Engineers, students are asked to engineer their own school supply box to hold all of their various back to school materials! (This book is not yet read online. You would need to purchase this book -links in file (Amazon). It is a great addition to your STEM library!

Just use the book as the hook and then the students will learn more about STEM throughout the lesson! This lesson gives you information about the book and links to more information on STEM and STEM thinking! Then it gives you the challenge, suggested materials, and guides you through the process of getting kids ready to complete the challenge. This one is set-up to be used with 2nd grade or 3rd grade. I have my students for 45 minutes at a time. You could possibly extend it into a two or three week lesson activity. Please feel free to share any feedback. I have more resources if you feel this one was helpful! Thank you so much for taking the time to look at my resources!

I create these resources to be used in my own classroom! I teach from this very same file! It is a good visual for students and if you were to be observed by administration. It helps to guide you with the lesson and gives the students a visual of what is expected. I work super hard on these lessons because I want my students to be engaged, have fun, and enjoy learning while they are in my classroom! I try to create real-world lessons where students have to engineer and design the solution.
It also gives them something to take home to hopefully explain the "process" of what they learned to adults at home! Please feel free to ask my questions and leave helpful feedback!! Thank you so much!!!

Back to School - Going Places (4th or 5th grade STEM Challenge)

Back to school should be fun and engaging! Just add STEM and the book Going Places and you have a perfect match! Back to school is the perfect time to give older STEM students a refresher course on just what STEM is all about, failures, creativity, and how we all see the world differently. This book is a perfect example of using mindset to help students understand how we all think differently and approach problems completely different. This difference in thinking is what makes us all unique and how STEM is different for each student! We all have our own solution to a problem! After reading the story Going Places, 4th or 5th grade students are asked to start the year off with building their own "go-cart" and then race them in their very own STEM Going Places Race!

Just use the book as the hook and then the students will learn more about STEM throughout the lesson! This lesson gives you information about the book and links to more information on STEM and STEM thinking! Back to School - The Day the Crayons Quit (1st grade STEM Challenge)

Back to School STEM - This is a ready to use STEM challenge featuring the story The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt. This can be used for a one class period type of STEM lesson or it could be completed in two class periods. I use them in my STEM lab with my first grade students. However, this activity could be used with any grade level as a back to school STEM activity. I use the book as the hook and then turn the problem into our STEM challenge. I have my students for 45 minutes at a time. You could possibly extend it into a two lesson activity. Please feel free to share any feedback. I have more resources if you feel this one was helpful! ************************************************************************************************************Back to School - Engineer a new toy - Featuring the story : Have Fun Molly Lou Melon (Kindergarten or 1st grade)

Back to school should be fun and engaging! Just add STEM and the book Have Fun Molly Lou Melon and you have a perfect match! Back to school is the perfect time to give STEM students a better understanding of STEM and the STEM mindset! I love using this book with my younger STEM learners! This book focuses on using imagination and creating their own toys to play with! It is the perfect STEM book for introducing STEM to kindergarten or 1st grade students. I use this lesson with my kindergarten students. For me, this lesson is not about the final end product (engineer a toy).....it is about introducing young students to STEM. It is about helping them learn to use supplies, plan, beginning to think, and solving problems on their own! More than likely, the end product will not look like a toy to you! BUT....it is about what it looks like for the student! It is something they created through STEM thinking and that is our ultimate goal! We want to create STEM thinkers even in our youngest learners!!!

Just use the book as the hook and then the students will learn more about STEM throughout the lesson! This lesson gives you information about the book and links to more information on STEM and STEM thinking! Then it gives you the challenge, suggested materials, and guides you through the process of getting kids ready to complete the challenge. This lesson does have two additional slides to help students understand what a challenge and constraints are. This lesson is all about exposure to the STEM way of thinking and doing! This one is set-up to be used with kindergarten or 1st grade. I have my students for 45 minutes at a time. You could possibly extend it into a two or three week lesson activity. Please feel free to share any feedback. I have more resources if you feel this one was helpful! Thank you so much for taking the time to look at my resources!
