Description

Balancing Chemical Equations Activity

In this activity simple activity, students (Part 1:) Read a bit of background on atoms, matter, chemistry, and practice identifying the number of atoms in several compounds chemical equations. (Part 2:) Read about chemical equations, and read the steps used to balance equations easily. Then, they practice nine examples.

A. NEXT GENERATION SCIENCE STANDARDS HEREIN

DCI’s: PS1.A Structure and Properties of Matter

PS1.B Chemical Reactions

PS3.B Conservation of Energy and Energy Transfer

Cross Cutting Concepts: Cause and Effect, Systems and System Models, Energy and Matter: Flows, Cycles, and Conservation; Scale, Proportion, and Quantity; Stability and Change

Scientific and Engineering Practices:

Developing and Using Models

Using Mathematics and Computations Thinking

B. SUGGESTED USES

Prior Knowledge: A basic understanding of atoms and bonding is helpful; structure of an atom, why atoms react, and how bonds form

Materials and Setup: The only materials required for this activity is this worksheet.

Time Frame/Implementation: This worksheet takes most of one class, to one class worth of time, depending on the length of your class.
