"I used this for my 7th grader, while we were working on data and statistics during math class. He especially enjoyed it because he is very enthused about baseball. "

Description

Not only does this activity give students a chance to practice their knowledge of statistics with mean, median, mode, range, quartiles, IQR, MAD, and box plots by using baseball data, but they also get a chance to move and gather their own data!

The practice pages can be used during a center, or as an assessment, but the activity having students collect data is best done as a whole class.

Included in this lesson:

•Actual baseball statistics that are used to find measures of center and variability, and create a box plot

•Practice determining measures of center and variability based on reading a box plot

•A class activity to gather data to then find measures of center and variability and to create a dot plot

•Answer Key

•A glossary of statistical terms

Understand that a set of data collected to answer a statistical question has a distribution which can be described by its center, spread, and overall shape.
Recognize that a measure of center for a numerical data set summarizes all of its values with a single number, while a measure of variation describes how its values vary with a single number.
Display numerical data in plots on a number line, including dot plots, histograms, and box plots.
