Description
Do your students struggle to write complete sentences, organize their ideas, or develop effective paragraphs? Many writing programs assume students are already ready for essay writing. But what about the students who still struggle with the basic foundations?
Essay Apprentice™ is a comprehensive writing intervention curriculum designed to help struggling and reluctant writers build confidence, strengthen sentence construction skills, and develop well-organized paragraphs before moving on to formal essay writing.
I created this system after an intervention class with high school juniors who were unable to write even 1-2 coherent paragraphs for an essay. They needed help with the very basic skills of putting sentences together into a paragraph, then putting paragraphs together in a way that made sense and answered the essay prompt. They "hated" writing, and many of them had lost all confidence in their ability to write. They were resistant, had all but given up, or had learning challenges that weren't being addressed.
They needed to gain confidence. They needed help that traditional essay programs glossed over. They didn't need "baby" resources meant for elementary students. They needed help and support that was scaffolded in a way that made sense to them but didn't insult them. I created Essay Apprentice™ for those students.
As Level 1 of my complete Essay Writing Curriculum, this program provides a structured, step-by-step progression that takes students from basic writing skills to independent paragraph writing.
Whether you're teaching intervention classes, resource students, English Language Learners, Special Education students, or below-grade-level writers, Essay Apprentice™ gives you the tools and lessons needed to help students experience success in writing. And now, this entire program has been updated and streamlined in June of 2026 to support your students with this step-by-step process, and with even more support for you as the teacher to guide them.
