Description

The basic facts practice pages are a quick, daily, facts practice program designed to encourage automaticity within a student’s numeracy knowledge.

With this program you will be able to automatically provide for differentiation within this single self-contained 10 minute activity.

All facts practice pages contain 70 questions and are expected to be answered within seven minutes and thirty seconds. The students should then correct their own papers and record the results in a graphical manner that helps them to use their mathematics in a meaningful manner to assist their own learning.

Students are:
- Practicing the four operations in stages that match their knowledge level
- Using percents in a meaningful manner
- Creating a graph to be able to visually assess their own progress
- Given freedom to choose what they are going to work on for that day
- Graded on their ability to record their progress and not their facts knowledge – which helps to reduce math anxiety
- Encouraged to be responsible for their own learning by correcting their own papers
- Able to have a visual record of their facts knowledge from the beginning to the end of the year, which can be easily viewed by teachers, parents, and for IEP or SST reports

The basic facts practice pages packet is a system for developing numeracy that I have created over the last 17 years of my middle school teaching career. It is designed as a daily short 10 minute warm up to the middle school math class. It can potentially be used within upper elementary and possibly lower high school students, but it is designed primarily for the 6th through 8th grade level.

Students are expected to answer 70 questions within seven minutes and thirty seconds. When done, they record the time it took and then they use the answer packet to self-correct their work. They use this information to convert them to percents and then record them onto a bar graph.

The program has students start off on their basic facts. These are 70 questions grouped by operation. The addition and subtraction facts range from zero to fifteen while the multiplication and division facts go from zero to twelve. After demonstrating proficiency the students are then moved on the integer facts. These facts are also grouped by operation. The addition and subtraction of integers range from negative twenty to twenty and the multiplication and division are from negative fifteen to fifteen. After demonstrating proficiency with the integer facts students are then moved onto the scrambled facts pages. The addition and subtraction within the scrambled pages ranges from negative thirty to thirty and multiplication and division are from negative twenty to twenty.

Contained within the file are a total of 165 pages. It has 7 pages of directions, a page to help students convert their number correct and time to a percent, a chart for students to keep track of their progress on the pages, a total of 48 basic fact practice pages, and answers for each page. I have also included specific pages to use for copying to help assist in saving the amount of paper used for the program.

** You will need a timer that can be displayed for the students. The timer should be able to be set for seven minutes and thirty seconds and should be able to count from zero to seven minutes and thirty seconds. The timer I use is the Teach Timer.

** Lastly, I feel very strongly about helping students to learn their basic facts and if you have any problems using this system, please email me and I will work with you to assist you in helping your students to get the most out of this that they can.
