Description
Here's a challenging and surprisingly fun (and addictive) way of teaching basic math concepts without boring students with the standard and arduous "drill & practice." Arithmetic Concepts Review 1 & 2 focuses on multiplication, factoring, and division using a game-theory based simulator from the University of Colorado's outstanding PhET simulators.
Steps 1, 2, and 3 have students competing against themselves (or each other, if you choose) to win achievement stars as they show proficiency in multiplication, factoring, and division.
Steps 4 and 5 have similar goals as students learn to apply basic math concepts in determining Area and Perimeter using another excellent PhET simulator.
Step 6 has students constructing what is essentially their own "Spaghetti House" using noodles and hot glue, after which they calculate their home's Area and Perimeter.
Beautifully illustrated and clearly written, this lab will motivate students to higher levels of math proficiency because it has all of the benefits of the standard "drill and practice" exercise, but with little if any of the negative side-effects! In short, this is a fun departure from the standard way of teaching basic math concepts, and your student's excitement and enhanced proficiency is all the evidence that you need to demonstrate this activity's effectiveness.
Enjoy!
