Description

This is an UPDATED super cute and detailed foldable for the operations of fractions! It would be a great addition to your student's interactive notebook! Great tool for Grades 5-6! This is a very basic and simple foldable regarding adding subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions. This DOES NOT INCLUDE MIXED NUMBERS! (I am currently working on that one and should have it posted in a few weeks!)

BEST WAY TO COPY- Pages 3 and 4-front and back

Pages 5 and 6-front and back

Pages 7 and 8-TEACHER KEY!!!

Directions for gluing into interactive student notebooks included!

Please note that this does mention multiplicative inverse simply for students to begin becoming familiar with future vocabulary!

I like the foldable format. However, there were no guiding teacher notes for the examples and many students struggled to fit all of the words/numbers in the flap provided for the examples. Graphic organizer would be better if split into 2 separate pages... One page for adding and subtracting fractions (WITH examples for both fractions AND mixed numbers as well as providing examples with borrowing for the subtraction) and another page for just multiplying and dividing fractions (with an emphasis on changing mixed numbers to improper fractions that provides guiding notes for this step). The division notes are awful. I absolutely DESPISE the "keep change flip, skip, flip," whatever. This does not teach the students the concept of multiplicative inverse which is essential for 7th grade standards. The word reciprocal is on there, but then has no definition to go with it. If I had looked at this more carefully I would not have bought it. I actually started the notes with my students, saw how frustrated they were, I got lost making the examples, and instead the next day I had the kids rip the page completely out. Started from scratch instead and made my own notes. Waste of class time and $3.

This foldable does not work, no instructions for printing and folding tried to print using several methods and the printing is off. Great idea but not very user friendly!

I am using this with my interactive notebooks - they are sixth graders so the addition and subtraction were filled in as review - then as I instructed the multiplication and division we returned to the foldable and completed it! Thanks.

Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators. For example, 2/3 + 5/4 = 8/12 + 15/12 = 23/12. (In general, ๐˜ข/๐˜ฃ + ๐˜ค/๐˜ฅ = (๐˜ข๐˜ฅ + ๐˜ฃ๐˜ค)/๐˜ฃ๐˜ฅ.)
Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication to multiply a fraction or whole number by a fraction.
Interpret and compute quotients of fractions, and solve word problems involving division of fractions by fractions, e.g., by using visual fraction models and equations to represent the problem. For example, create a story context for (2/3) รท (3/4) and use a visual fraction model to show the quotient; use the relationship between multiplication and division to explain that (2/3) รท (3/4) = 8/9 because 3/4 of 8/9 is 2/3. (In general, (๐˜ข/๐˜ฃ) รท (๐˜ค/๐˜ฅ) = ๐˜ข๐˜ฅ/๐˜ฃ๐˜ค.) How much chocolate will each person get if 3 people share 1/2 lb of chocolate equally?
