The intention of this product is to help students practice proofreading and editing skills in various writing assignments. Each page of the product contains one writing piece, either a short story or paragraph. The writings are a mix of fiction and non-fiction. The writing pieces contain errors that the students must find and correct. Each writing piece focuses on one or two different proofreading skills. For example, one writing piece might only contain punctuation errors, while another might focus on sentence fragments. An answer key is included for each writing piece.

I set them up this way so a teacher would be able to conduct a mini-lesson with a small group or whole class and work on just one or two skills at a time. That’s how I used them in my classroom. I would take small groups and work on one or two skills with them using a mini-lesson and then we (or they) would complete the worksheet. If used it as a whole class lesson, I projected the piece using my document camera and we corrected it or checked it together.

This product can also be printed out and each writing piece laminated to be used in a writing center or part of a Daily 5 literacy block. Laminate with the incorrect piece on one side and the answer key on the back. The students can use dry erase markers and correct the errors right on the paper, then check it with the answer key on the back. There is enough spacing between the lines for the students to correct the errors directly on the page. They can be used in a variety of ways in a writing center. This is just one suggestion.
The product also serves as good writing homework practice as well. It’s brief and isn’t overwhelming.
